Basic idea

When comparing the twin screw extruder with the single-shaft extruder, it is soon apparent that many of the advantages of the multi-shaft machine lie in the intermeshing section.

The following functions can be identified:

  • Surface renewal
  • Self-cleaning
  • Dispersive mixing via elongational flow
  • Distributive mixing via stream divisions

In order to take further advantage of these benefits, it was suggested that additional intermeshing screws be introduced to increase the proportion of the intermeshing section as the most important functional zone of the extruder.

Development possibilities for popular extrusion systems such as the single-shaft extruder and the co-rotating twin screw have virtually been exhausted.
